Method
Prepare the Vegetables
- In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the onion and garlic until translucent.
- Add the chopped Swiss chard and cook until wilted, about 3-4 minutes.
Mix the Base
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
- Tear the stale bread into bite-sized pieces and add to the egg mixture.
- Fold in the sautéed Swiss chard and half of the Gruyere cheese.
Assemble and Bake
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease the baking dish and pour the mixture into it.
- Sprinkle the remaining Gruyere cheese on top.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set.
Serve
- Let the strata cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
