Swiss Chard and Gruyere Strata

Ingredients
  

Bread and Base
  • 6 slices stale bread preferably sourdough or French
  • 2 cups milk whole or 2%
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
Vegetables
  • 1 bunch Swiss chard washed and chopped
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
Cheese and Seasoning
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese shredded
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Method
 

Prepare the Vegetables
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, sauté the onion and garlic until translucent.
  2. Add the chopped Swiss chard and cook until wilted, about 3-4 minutes.
Mix the Base
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
  2. Tear the stale bread into bite-sized pieces and add to the egg mixture.
  3. Fold in the sautéed Swiss chard and half of the Gruyere cheese.
Assemble and Bake
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease the baking dish and pour the mixture into it.
  3. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyere cheese on top.
  4. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and set.
Serve
  1. Let the strata cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
