Method

  2. In a mixing bowl, toss the pitted cherries with half of the sugar and let sit for about 10 minutes to release their juices.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and remaining sugar.
  4. Stir in melted butter and milk until just combined; some lumps are okay.
  5. Spread the cherries evenly in the greased dish and pour the batter on top.
  6. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and bubbly around the edges.
